@#$^^$@*&!!@$ Gluten Free Diet
The gluten-free diet has been easy enough for the two weeks that I've been following it. But today it's pissing me off, because I want something hearty for lunch, I don't have it in the house, and I don't want to go out shopping in the rain.

I've looked over the delivery menus, and there's nothing I can order without having a lengthy conversation on the phone, first, and I'm sure peak lunchtime is not when restaurants are interested in having that conversation. What a freakin' pain in the ass. I'd love a burger - and I can deal with no bun - but I have to find out whether there are breadcrumbs or marinade used in the burger. I'd love a Philly Cheesesteak - and hell, I can deal with the meat and cheese tossed on a salad. It's not available as an option on their menu, and again - this is not the time of day to have that conversation, I'm sure. Pizza and Chinese food are out. Even sushi delivery is out because I have to make sure they don't use imitation crab (which usually contains gluten) and I've been lied to about that in the past when I asked out of curiousity. And I haven't been able to find gluten-free soy sauce in any stores yet, so I have to order some over the web.  There's a Thai places that does a beef salad bowl, but again, I have to know what the beef is marinated in.

I don't want to be that person who has to ask about every single ingredient!

Until today it looked like following the GF diet wouldn't be so bad - today is testing my commitment. Severely.

Just get nigiri only. It's simply x + rice. (where x = selected fish, shrimp, whatevah)
Plus, it's most tasty!

Yah, I'm a big fan of nigiri (and sashimi - I've been an expert sushi eater for almost 20 years) but I've been told that some restaurants actually use some soy sauce with the wasabi to bind the fish to the rice. I'm not worried about that when I'm actually IN a restaurant, and can check on that - but for sushi delivery (I was looking at Yami Sushi) I just can't trust it without having to have that damn annoying conversation, which also only works if the other person on the phone speaks good English.

Argh.

mm. That is frustrating. The rain has really passed us by at this point. Perhaps you should go for some Donburi? yum yum

There are several varieties that do not have soy sauce or wheat-y bits. Teka-don or negitoro-don would be ideal, I think. You might be able to get unagi-don w/out any sauce. (I'm not sure what the unagi sauce is made from; some kind of sweet teriyaki, I think)

Ok, now you're really making me hungry...

Alas, the sauce on unagi does have gluten.

FYI, tamari sauce is soy sauce but gluten-free. You won't know the difference.

This won't fix your current issue with lunch, but if you are looking for gluten-free recipes there are a bunch on the Dr. Gourmet website at http://www.drgourmet.com/gluten/recipes.shtml

(PS: we are speaking again.)

I didn't see Tamari sauce at Trader Joe's either - is that something I should be able to get at a regular grocery store?

Thanks for the link - and I'm very glad things are working out. *hugs*

I don't know about a regular grocery store, but I bought my bottle of Tamari at the Dekalb Farmers Market.

Have you read Gluten-Free Girl, by Shauna James Ahern? 'song read it a few weeks ago (she's dealing with some issues that may or may not have gluten triggers), and said that it was very good for menu planning. Not sure if there are good food-ordering tips, but it might be a good place to look.

Another option is to look towards any place with low/no carb/Atkins on the menus; the same breadcrumbs that you can't have also are a no-no on those diets, so burgers and the like from them should be okay.

And I'll second the comment about Nigiri. Sushi in general is fine, as long as you avoid California roles or variants that have the fake crab. But anything that's just built around a chunk of fish (tuna, salmon, etc) should be fine on that front (although as you've noted, using the soy sauce won't be an option). The exception might be eel -- not sure what's in the sauce.

Hey, thanks, by the way for the suggestions. And I'll pick up a copy of that book.

Alas, the sauce on the eel does contain gluten.

Also, just as an fyi, we had a celiac friend in Atlanta a few years ago, and the Maggianos near Lenox bent over backwards for her to make sure they cooked something delicious that was gluten-free.

Today I debated...

So many people "cheat" regularly, why don't I? Why can't I have my favourite sandwich every once in a while?
haha

I had a salad instead.

*f*in restrictions.

I'm heavily tempted to cheat, but I'm determined to be "pure" for a good two months, since that's what my doctor thinks I need to do in order to tell whether gluten is causing the skin problem.

*sigh* Salad indeed. Put a cheeseburger on top of it, and it would be delicious.

Yeah, was over on the other side of town near my favourite Irish pub... got a steak salad with chips (UK chips not American chips) on it and a gorgeous garlic balsamic vinaigrette.
